Junior Residents

Postgraduate Year 1

At Women's College Hospital, we offer an exciting and unique opportunity for junior residents to receive hands-on training in basic anesthesia. Junior residents may request Women's College Hospital for their rotation. The University of Toronto's undergraduate committee makes the final decision about assignments.

Participatory Training

During their two-month rotation, junior residents start with routine general anesthesia for low-risk procedures, under close one-to-one supervision from staff anesthesiologists. Residents then go on to learn more advanced procedures, such as major regional blocks. Since our senior residents are occupied in obstetrics, junior residents get valuable experience with actual anesthesia procedures in the operating room, which are usually available only through observation in other hospitals.

Specialized Curriculum

We offer a special anesthesia curriculum designed specifically for PGY-1 residents. Didactic sessions are conducted in small groups taught by staff anesthesiologists. Residents are also closely supervised by faculty members.

Grand Rounds

Presentations in a wide variety of anesthesia-related topics are given to the entire department. Each resident has the opportunity to present at grand rounds.

Residency Duties

In the operating room junior residents will:

  • interview patients
  • formulate the anesthetic plan and discuss this with senior staff
  • do the initial IV management and airway management
  • administer the drugs for anesthesia, under close supervision

Rotations outside the operating room include:

  • obstetrics
  • chronic pain
  • nerve blocks
  • preadmission clinic consultations

Approximately 75 per cent of the residency is spent in the OR, 10 per cent in obstetrics, and the other 15 per cent in other areas.
