Consumer/Patient Education at Women's

We believe that empowering our patients and clients with accessible information about their health needs is an important piece of the equation when it comes to disease prevention and over all well-being. Many of our programs and services have a client-centric education component. Here are some of them:

Athletes@Risk Program

The Athletes@Risk Program is a licensed preventive education program developed by Women's College Hospital physician Dr. Julia Alleyne. The program features five interactive workshop units entitled:

  1. Understanding the Health Consequences
  2. Food as Fuel
  3. My Body, My Sport
  4. Getting Strong, Getting Fit
  5. Life Skills and Wellness
For further information about the program, or to receive a free information package please contact Heather Robinson, education co-ordinator, at 416-323-7527, toll free at 1-800-363-9353, or email: heather.robinson@wchospital.ca

Marion Powell Women's Health Information Centre

The mandate of this resource centre is patient education. It houses many books, periodicals, pamphlets and other educational materials. Once a month it also has a display in the hospital lobby with fact sheets on different health topics. The centre also hosts regular "Lunch and Learn sessions", which are free information sessions on health-related topics of interest to women.

Osteoporosis Program

This program offers patients an Osteoporosis Update Workshop (a "refresher course" for patients already attending the clinic).

The Phototherapy Education and Research Centre

This is a light-treatment facility. It specializes in educating patients about photosensitive diseases - diseases of the skin that are sensitive to and affected by light (such as psoriasis) -and on helping patients manage such diseases.

Tri-Hospital Diabetes Education Centre (TRIDEC)

TRIDEC has served as a model for the development of diabetes education centres across Canada. TRIDEC offers a range of individual and group diabetes education programs, which include nutrition counselling from a registered dietitian. The program works with clients to help them identify needs and learn the self-care skills to manage diabetes. Education programs include those for people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, on topics such as healthy eating, managing medications (including insulin), glucose monitoring and reading food labels.

Women's Cardiovascular Health Initiative

The Women's Cardiovascular Health Initiative program teaches women with heart disease - and women who are at high risk of developing heart disease - prevention and rehabilitation strategies. A multidisciplinary health care team provides risk factor modification counselling services and education sessions and participants are offered enrollment into a women's exercise training program.
