Summer Student Research Day celebrates tomorrow’s research leaders

August 8, 2016

Promising young scientists presented their innovative research on Summer Student Research Day on July 21.

Undergraduate and graduate students from across Canada and abroad presented the projects they have contributed to over the summer to an audience of Women’s College Hospital’s staff and scientists. The students are participants in Women’s College Research Institute’s summer student research program, which immerses students in research for three to four months each summer.

Their projects included an analysis of Canadian summer student research programs related to medicine and a pilot program to help prevent diabetes in high-risk women. Students also presented on research initiatives to develop health system innovations, improving quality of care while reducing costs.

“When we created the summer student research program, we set out to develop the next generation of researchers in the areas of women’s health and innovative models of care,” said Dr. Paula Rochon, vice-president of research, WCH. “Today’s presentations showed what strong potential these students have as researchers. It’s incredible to see what they’ve accomplished in a few short months.”

The summer student research program has grown highly successful over 13 years with hundreds of applications each year. Students learn practical research knowledge to help prepare them for post-graduate education and their careers. They work closely with scientists on a research project and attend weekly sessions provided by the scientists at WCH to build their skills in research.
