One year ago, Women’s College Hospital (WCH) and the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) embarked on an exciting partnership to provide additional support and resources to women with breast cancer and those at a higher risk of developing breast cancer, such as women who carry the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

Through the partnership, patients of WCH’s Henrietta Banting Breast Centre are immediately referred or make an appointment with the onsite peer support and information specialist, Kate Mlodzik.

Mlodzik, who has received training from both WCH and CCS, provides one-on-one support and information for women who are newly diagnosed with breast cancer, newly identified  BRCA1/BRCA2 mutation carriers and women considering breast reconstruction. She also meets with women who are at various stages of their cancer journeys.

As someone who has had breast cancer herself, Mlodzik has been able to share her experiences and use them to help guide other breast cancer patients and their families.

“In my role at WCH this past year, I have had the privilege of providing immediate emotional support for patients after receiving the difficult news of their diagnosis,” said Mlodzik. “Beyond the diagnosis stage, I offer patients information about what to expect with chemotherapy, radiation, reconstruction, and various other surgeries, as well as directing patients to additional community resources.”

Patient feedback on the program has been very positive so far. Patients have identified that they have felt less anxious and alone, and more supported and informed after speaking with the specialist.

Mlodzik sees WCH patients on Mondays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Henrietta Banting Breast Centre on the 5th floor and also offers phone appointments throughout the week.
