WCH surgeon launches on-demand physiotherapy service

Accessible, patient-centred care is something that all healthcare providers aim to offer, and one Women’s College Hospital (WCH) surgeon is making this a reality through an online service that allows patients who require physiotherapy to receive the care they need, when and where it’s most convenient for them.

Dr. Jas Chahal, orthopedic surgeon, WCH, is one of the co-founders of a new service called Therapia, an online platform that connects patients with local home care physiotherapists in and around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Through the platform, patients can select a physiotherapist, request an appointment at a location and date/time of their choice and make a payment, all from the comfort of their own home.

“Patients will spend, on average, more than 40 minutes travelling to and waiting for their physio appointments— and that’s if they’re physically able to get around,” says Dr. Chahal. “For patients who are injured or who have just come out of surgery, finding appropriate transportation can be incredibly difficult, lead to gaps in care and subsequently cause a delay in their recovery.”

Therapia allows its users to completely customize and personalize their care through a variety of features. When selecting a physiotherapist, users can filter their search based on expertise and specializations, price, ratings and more. They can also view their therapist’s profile and leave a rating once the appointment is finished.

For those with busy schedules, appointments can be selected as early as two hours from the time the booking process is started, giving users the flexibility to fit last-minute appointments into their day. Most importantly, patient records are kept up-to-date and are accessible by all Therapia care providers. For patients, this means that any provider they work with will be able to look at their history and read any post-appointment notes related to their care.

“There is increasing scientific evidence that home physiotherapy after many surgical procedures is just as effective as clinic-based care. Furthermore, it’s more effective for patients to learn their exercises in their homes where they will actually be performing them daily, as opposed to a clinic. So by using Therapia, patients are essentially ensuring that they get the most out of their care, in the most convenient way possible.”

Therapia currently operates in the GTA, but Dr. Chahal says that the team hopes to expand their services across Canada in the near future. To learn more about Therapia, click here to visit the website or follow them on Facebook.
