Sheila Macdonald, clinical manager for the Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Care Centre (SA/DVCC) at Women’s College Hospital, has been selected as the provincial director of the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centres. This new position has been created to provide network leadership to better address accountability among stakeholders and to ensure patient standards of care are being met.

This position replaces the provincial co-ordinator role, which Sheila has held since 1993.  It also entails financial accountability for current and future funding for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Treatment Centres.

The network provides leadership and support to 35 hospital-based centres across the province, including the centre at Women’s College Hospital. The network strives to establish standardization in service across all centres through collaboration in research, education and training activities. It also aims to be a source of information and expertise about the health and forensic care of victims/survivors of sexual violence. The network’s members, which include staff and healthcare professionals from various centres, work closely with other health and legal professionals and community partners to provide education and training in the prevention, care and treatment of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Sheila holds a master of nursing degree and has worked extensively with adolescents and adults who have experienced sexual assault and/or domestic violence. Sheila has been an educator and consultant in the area of sexual assault and domestic violence for many years, and has been recognized with several awards for her outstanding leadership and clinical excellence.

Sheila will continue to be based at WCH, with a dual reporting relationship to the hospital and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

Congratulations, Sheila!
