Women's College Hospital's International Women's Day 2018 Celebrations

On March 8, Women's College Hospital (WCH) proudly celebrated International Women's Day (IWD) which honours the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and marks a call to action to accelerate gender parity.

To mark this special day, staff and visitors were invited to fill out #PressforProgress pledge cards to highlight the ways that they are working towards gender parity and equality for women in every dimension of life.

The morning presentation Conversations for Change: Women’s Health and Rights Trajectories was hosted by the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, and featured an esteemed group of speakers on topics such as violence against women, indigenous women's rights and health and achievements and struggles of the LGBTQ2S population.

The keynote presentation Thriving at the Intersections: Being a Black Woman in Medicine was given by Chika Stacy Oriuwa (@chikastacypoet) a second-year medical student at the University of Toronto, where in her class of 259 people, she is the only black student. Chika shared her personal experience about what it means to her to be a black woman in medicine.

Chika, who is also an acclaimed spoken word artist, opened with a poem she wrote and dedicated to WCH. You can view a video of her performance here.

In her keynote presentation, Chika candidly shared her struggles and her hopes for the future of our community.

“Growing up, I never saw a doctor that looked like me, but I knew from a young age that I was placed on this earth to help, and to heal, and that medicine was the vocation that I was called to pursue,” she said.

Chika ended her talk with this inspiring message: “To my sisters, from all walks of life. Remember that though there are hurdles to clear, you are not alone and success is all the more rewarding because of it. Be fearless, for there is so much you have to offer. Be loud, proud, intelligent and beautiful. Be your own woman, without reservation, without apology. Be you.”
