Dr. An-Wen Chan honoured with U of T’s Rising Star Award

Dr. An-Wen ChanOn Nov. 3, Dr. An-Wen Chan, a Mohs surgeon at Women's College Hospital (WCH) and Phelan Scientist at Women's College Research Institute, received the Rising Star Award from the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine. Every year, the award is presented to an alumnus for outstanding achievement or service.

Dr. Chan was recognized for his contributions to shaping research policy and standards internationally. He chairs the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials (SPIRIT) initiative, aimed at improving the quality of clinical trial protocols. Last year, he led the SPIRIT group to develop and publish a checklist and explanatory document to guide scientists through the planning of their trials.

The guidelines have gained exceptional traction – receiving global endorsement by more than 100 trial groups, industry sponsors, academic institutions and medical journals.
