WCH clinician-scientist receives research award to study women’s heart health

October 26, 2015

Dr. Jay UdellDr. Jay Udell, cardiologist and scientist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), was one of 10 inaugural recipients of the CP Has Heart Cardiovascular Awards from the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The award will allow him to take a deeper look at the impact of fertility drug therapy on women’s cardiovascular health.

Dr. Udell and his team recently found that women who take fertility therapy are at an increased risk for short-term cardiovascular complications in pregnancy. Less is known, however, about the health consequences following unsuccessful fertility drug therapy. With the new funding, Dr. Udell will explore the long-term risks in women who are unsuccessful at becoming pregnant after treatment. This research will have important public health implications, given the increasing use of fertility treatment among Canadian women.
