Honouring our diverse community: Pride 2011

Women’s College Hospital is committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all employees and patients feel welcome. To honour this commitment and celebrate diversity, WCH is joining the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) Pride festivities this summer.

While Pride is full of exciting parties and parades it is also an important time to affirm our Equity Vision by rejecting homophobia and discrimination and affirming human rights.

“Pride week is a great opportunity to have fun and support friends, family, employees, volunteers and patients who are part of the LGBTQ communities,” explains Angela Robertson, director of equity and community engagement. “It’s an important way for Women’s College to confirm and strengthen our solidarity with the communities.”

WCH will be participating in the Dyke March on Saturday, July 2 at 2 p.m. as well as hosting an information booth at Pride’s street fair on both July 2 and 3.

The booth will help to increase awareness by providing information about the resources that Women’s College offers the LGBTQ communities and their families. For the eighth year, the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Care Centre will be offering resources and information on where to get support and tips on how to stay safe in the city. And the Queer Women’s Health Initiative (QWHI) will promote the Check It Out: Queer Women Need Paps Too! campaign.

“Pride is the perfect time to show our support to the LGBTQ communities, but it shouldn’t be the only time,” adds Robertson. “That’s why the hospital has joined Pride at Work, a national organization that promotes inclusive workplaces across Canada.”
