Ontarians donate more than five million hours of their time each year volunteering at organizations across the province. Caroline Grose, Ann Rice, Wendy Chou and Joanne Griffith are four of these Ontarians.

These four women volunteer at Women’s College Hospital and are the recipients of 2011 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards – which honour the thousands of people who generously contribute their time as volunteers across the province.

“Being at the awards ceremony on June 14 was an eye-opening experience for me,” explains Chou, treasurer for our Association of Volunteers and 10-year award recipient. “Seeing all the people who dedicate their time really solidified how important volunteering is.”

Grose, another 2011 recipient, has been volunteering at Women’s College for over 40 years. She is currently the co-president of the Association of Volunteers, chair of the annual general meeting committee and works at the information desk and in the WCH archives.

“Over 40 per cent of our volunteers have been donating their time to the hospital for more than 10 years,” explains Sarah Lord, co-ordinator, volunteer resources. “This says something profound about the volunteers at Women’s College. I was so pleased to attend the awards ceremony to celebrate the dedication of our volunteers.”

The 138 volunteers at Women’s College are an integral part of our organization. They put in over 15,000 hours of service each year and help in over 25 areas of the hospital. They can be found organizing special events like the jewelry sale and spring raffle, and assisting patients and their families at the front desk and in waiting rooms. Wherever they are, they are always friendly, approachable and happy to lend a helping hand to patients, families, staff and physicians alike.
