Emergency and Followup Care

The Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Care Centre offers our clients caring and compassionate emergency and followup care.

Emergency Care

When you arrive at the hospital, you will first be seen by health professionals at the Urgent Care Centre. A registered nurse with specialized training from the
SA/DVCC will then come in to see you.

The medical care you receive may include:

  • an examination, treatment and documentation of physical injuries
  • medication to prevent pregnancy
  • testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • testing for drugs that might have been used by the assailant to commit the assault

If you choose to involve the police:

  • we will carefully collect and record the necessary evidence for release and analysis.

Follow-up Care

Nursing Care
Within days of your visit to us, a female registered nurse will contact you. She will:

  • check on your emotional and physical well-being
  • encourage you to make a followup appointment with us or your family doctor
  • discuss any concerns you may have
  • provide any support you may need
  • arrange for any referrals you may want

We encourage you to contact the SA/DVCC with any questions or concerns related to your situation.

Counselling
We offer individual counselling for women, men, transgender, transsexual and intersex people (16 years of age and older) who have been sexually assaulted or who have experienced intimate partner abuse. Support groups are also offered periodically throughout the year.

SA/DVCC counsellors recognize and respond to the holistic (emotional, physical, social, spiritual and legal) needs of each person. The centre is committed to providing clients with support, education and resources as they explore the impacts of violence and trauma, as well as strategies for coping.

Art Therapy
The centre offers individual and group Art Therapy.
