Family Way Obstetrical Group

Obstetrical Group | Women's College Hospital

FamilyWay OB Logo

We are a group of family physicians with a special interest and expertise in pregnancy and birth. Fully trained in low-risk obstetrical care, we deliver approximately 500 babies every year. We are fortunate to work closely with superb nurses, obstetricians, pediatricians and anesthesiologists. This ensures access to the highest standard of care for our families.

Women are referred to our group by other family physicians for care during pregnancy, childbirth and the immediate post-partum period. After delivery, they return to their regular family doctors for their ongoing healthcare and that of their babies. If your regular family doctor is a member of Family Way, she or he will continue to provide care for you and your baby after the birth.

Please note:

As of July 1, 2017, we will be transitioning our deliveries from the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Birthing Unit to the Mount Sinai Hospital Birthing Unit. Regular prenatal care will stay at WCH’s Family Practice Health Centre. We are working hard to ensure a seamless transition from Sunnybrook to Mount Sinai. Information about deliveries for both sites before and after July 1, can be found throughout this webpage.

Our Philosophy of Care

We take a family-centered approach to pregnancy and birth.

We believe in educating families about the choices available to them throughout pregnancy and birth. At all times our primary goal is that of a safe pregnancy and birth, resulting in a healthy woman and healthy baby.

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Where will I be seen for my prenatal appointments?

Contact our office at 416-323-6060 to find the most convenient options for you. Your partner is welcome and encouraged to attend all your prenatal appointments.

Where will I deliver my baby?

On or before June 30, 2017

Our birthing unit is located at the Sunnybrook Hospital at 2075 Bayview Avenue in the M-wing, 5th floor. This is a brand-new, state of the art facility with beautiful birthing rooms. After your baby is born you will stay in the same hospital on the same floor.

On or after July 1, 2017

You will deliver your baby at the Mount Sinai Hospital Birthing Unit, located at 600 University Avenue on the 15th floor. Mount Sinai has one of the largest perinatal centres in North America. After your baby is born you will stay in the same hospital, on either the 15th or 16th floor.

Who will attend the birth of my baby?

Our group members work call “shifts” of 24 hours. You will be attended by a Family Way staff physician and a family medicine resident who will follow your labour over a 24-hour period. In addition, our hospital has a “one-on-one” nursing policy: you will have a dedicated nurse for your labour and birth.

Who takes care of my baby in the hospital?

One of the advantages of choosing the family way team to deliver your baby is that the same team will provide care for you and your newborn after birth. A team member will visit you every day in the hospital to provide breastfeeding support and ensure that you and your baby are in good health.

Can I meet the other doctors in the group?

Yes! We host a “Meet the Doctors Night”. View the schedule for 2017. These informal evenings start with a tour of the birthing unit at 6 p.m. on a Monday evening followed by a chance for you and your partner to meet the doctors on our team at 6:30 p.m.
