Childbirth Education Classes

We offer two options for Childbirth Education (prenatal classes). These education sessions will empower and equip you and your birth partner with key skills for a positive prenatal and birth experience.

Weekend Childbirth Education Course

This comprehensive weekend course is offered to individuals in their 3rd trimester and facilitated by a registered practical nurse. Course content focuses on preparing for the labour and delivery experience and early newborn care.

The goal of the class is to provide participants with information about:

  • reproductive anatomy (how the body works around pregnancy and birth)
  • stages of labour (what happens during labour)
  • medical interventions (what they are, risks/benefits, options)
  • pain medication options, including epidural anesthesia
  • infant feeding (breastfeeding)
  • newborn appearance and routines
  • postpartum recovery (physical and emotional)
  • labour coping strategies: relaxation, breathing, positive positioning
  • birth plans
  • role of support people

2018 Dates (weekend courses available, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.):

PREP Course (Prenatal Education and Resources Program)

This course is offered in 3 parts at different points during your pregnancy. Each session focuses on topics specific to where you’re at. Sessions are facilitated by Family Medicine Residents and Physicians.

Topics Include:

  • Prenatal care
  • Changes in pregnancy
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Environmental exposures
  • Medication safety
  • Prenatal care: what to expect at your visits
  • Fetal movement
  • Preterm labour
  • Cord blood banding
  • Delayed cord clamping
  • Setting yourself up for success
  • In hospital newborn care
  • Going home with your newborn
  • Preparing for labour
  • First, second & third stages of labour
  • Assisted deliveries
  • Infant feeding
