FAQs

  • The Papanicolaou or “Pap” test has now been replaced by routine HPV testing for cervical cancer screening as of March 1 2025 in Ontario. If you previously had a normal Pap, you should return for your next cervical screening 3 years after your last test, unless you require more frequent testing as a result of a previous abnormal result. If you have had an HPV test, cervical screening is recommended every 5 years if negative. For positive HPV testing you may need to have repeat screening done sooner or be seen by a Gynecologist depending on your results.
  • Cervical screening should not be repeated sooner than the recommended guidelines. You may be asked to reschedule your appointment if you are not yet due for screening. If you would like to do a test earlier because of symptoms, please discuss your options with your primary care provider.
