Specialty Clinic for Biomechanical Foot Assessment & Custom-Made Foot Orthotics

More than one-quarter of your body’s 206 bones are in your feet: 26 in each foot! That’s in addition to each foot’s 33 joints, which work with a complex array of muscles and tendons every time you take a step.

Your feet don’t just take you from place to place. In addition to making you mobile, your feet help you balance, support your body, and act as your body’s shock absorbers. Factors ranging from posture to high heels to diabetes can have a big impact on the health of your feet.

The Foot Care Centre is a specialty orthotics and foot assessment clinic. Our staff of foot care specialists includes certified pedorthists, occupational therapists and chiropodists. We are dedicated to providing excellent service, quality products and expertise in the treatment of biomechanical foot problems. The centre has been operating at Women's College Hospital since 1985.

The following clinical services are available by appointment:

  • Biomechanical foot assessment and gait analysis
  • Custom-made orthotics
  • Education and advice on biomechanical foot problems such as painful flat feet, bunions, plantar fasciitis and other types of foot pain
  • Foot care services including nail care, corn removal and ingrown nail care

Information on the cost of our services
There is no appointment fee for Ontario residents with presentation of a valid Ontario Health card.  Clinic staff will inform the patient of the cost of treatment or orthotic devices. In some cases extended health insurance or third party payers will cover the cost of orthotics.  Patients may wish to check with their insurance provider regarding coverage and requirements for reimbursement of custom-made orthotics.

Referral for Clinical appointments
A physician’s referral is required for new Foot Care Centre patients. Repeat patients may also require a Prescription to claim for orthotics on their insurance and should obtain this from their doctor prior to ordering orthotics.

Please use our Referral & Prescription Form (.pdf) which can be faxed to our clinic at 416-323-6522.

Most extended health insurance plans and third party payers require a physician’s prescription to claim custom-made orthotics.
