Happy National Volunteer Week!

April 14, 2023

This week is National Volunteer Week, an opportunity to recognize and celebrate Women’s College Hospital’s (WCH) incredible volunteers and all they do for our patients and community. This year’s theme, “Volunteering Weaves us Together,” perfectly captures the spirit of WCH with our volunteers back onsite supporting our patients and teams across the hospital.

Women’s College has over 150 active volunteers including 63 students and 11 WCRI Research volunteers, all who contribute approximately 2,500 volunteer hours per month, or 30,000 hours over a year. And the number of volunteers at WCH continues to grow, with many applications coming in from community members wanting to join the impressive volunteer team at Women’s.

WCH’s volunteers assist our teams with a variety of tasks as well as “pop-up” opportunities to work on special projects. From reconciling lists for Family Practice and updating Emergency Preparedness Binders for Facilities & Operations to supporting Infection Prevention and Control and supporting activities for Accreditation, our volunteers are integral to the hospital’s day-to-day operations.

And the impact of our volunteers is not only felt by our teams, but also our patients, who often turn to volunteers for help navigating their journey through the hospital or even comfort in difficult times. Our community wouldn’t be the same without our volunteers.

More broadly, WCH’s volunteers support numerous departments and initiatives, including:

  • Acute Ambulatory Care Unit (AACU)
  • After Cancer Treatment Transition
  • WCH Archives
  • Mobile book carts
  • Cardiac Health/Gym
  • Family Practice
  • Human Resources
  • Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC)
  • Occupational Health, Safety & Wellness
  • Information Desk
  • Lobby Lab
  • Medical Imaging/ultrasound
  • Surgical Services

  • TAPMI
  • Wayfinding
  • And clinics like
    • Breast Imaging

    • Crossroads Clinic
    • Endocrinology
    • Environmental Health Clinic
    • Breast Imaging
    • Genetics
    • Gynecology
    • Headache Clinic
    • Respirology

With the support of our volunteers, our teams are able to focus on delivering excellent patient-centered care knowing that integral tasks like reminder phone calls, help filling out paperwork and other administrative duties are being taken care.

On behalf of all our staff, physicians, learners, researchers and the entire Women’s College Hospital community, thank you to all our volunteers for your continued support and dedication.
