1. Why is Black History and Futures Month significant to you?

Black History and Futures month is significant to me because it is a month that highlights the accomplishments and contributions of Black individuals. It allows others to learn about those contributions which they may not have otherwise learned about. Despite many challenges, we prevail and thrive.

2. How has your Black heritage influenced your work in healthcare?

Being a Black health care professional working in a patient facing role, I get to see quite a few Black patients who immediately feel a sense of comfort when they see a familiar face. I have gotten that feedback from patients. It is great to have that representation of staff for the communities that we serve.

3. What do you perceive as the main challenge(s) for the Black community in healthcare, both as patients and providers?

I think cultural differences. It is important for health care providers to understand the culture of the community which they serve.

4. Who is your Black mentor or role model? Why?

Nelson Mandela of course! He was the most courageous, resilient, patient person. Whatever situation you are going though, you can just think of Nelson Mandela and be inspired, uplifted and brave. He is the epitome for strength.
