Name: Pei Xuan (Rachel) Chen

Pronouns: she/her

Title & Department: RN, Peri-Anesthesia Department

On the WCH team for: 2 years (1 yr at PACU)

What does your typical workday look like?

My typical workday can vary depending on the type of shift and role I’ve been assigned in my unit. Sometimes I can start as early as 0630, other times I can start as late as 1100. PACU is an interesting place to work at because I get to partake in multiple peri-operative nursing roles, work closely with the multidisciplinary team and help patients at various stages before/after their operations. For example, sometimes I am responsible to recover a patient after surgery, ensuring they wake up safely from anesthesia, meet all the discharge criteria and have received all essential post-op information to go home. In other times, I can help admit pre-op patients, ensuring they are ready for their procedures here at WCH.

What excites you the most about working at WCH?

I have been a member of WCH for 2 years, I first started at the Gynecoloy Clinic and then transitioned to the PACU about a year ago.  Throughout the 2 years, I’ve always felt supported, respected as a member of the WCH team and welcomed. The inclusive culture of the institution for both staff and patients makes me appreciate working as part of this team. In addition, the high calibre team I work with who always strives to deliver exceptional patient-centred care to patients motivate me to be better each day.

How does your work contribute to creating a positive patient experience?

I try my best to provide patient-centred care by getting to know my patient, learning about their unique background, individuality and preferences as well as engaging in clear communication so my patients feel supported, heard and comfortable during their journey at WCH. In addition, I engage closely with the inter-professional team to ensure we create a welcoming and safe environment for our patients at WCH.

Tell us one to three things that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you!

I don’t actually drink more than one cup of coffee daily (on average)
