Dr. Meb Rashid receives Ontario Medical Association’s Presidential Award

May 23, 2016

Dr. Meb Rashid, medical director of Women’s College Hospital’s (WCH) Crossroads Clinic for refugees was recently presented with the Presidential Award by the Ontario Medical Association (OMA).

The Presidential Award is given annually to a member of the OMA in recognition of their exceptional and long-lasting humanitarian service to the greater community, within Ontario or elsewhere. The award recipient, by his or her actions, expresses the highest quality of service by a physician that the OMA admires.  Nominations for the award can be made by any member of the association and all nominations are reviewed by a special awards committee.

Dr. Rashid’s humanitarian work has helped refugees from all over the world coming to Canada get the healthcare that they need. In 2011, Dr. Rashid co-founded the Crossroads Clinic at WCH, which provides primary care to newly-arrived refugees for their first two years in Canada. The clinic’s services include management of chronic diseases and acute medical issues, preventative care, family planning advice, assistance with issues such as sleep disorders, depressed moods and anxiety and more. After two years, patients are connected with a family physician in their area.  To date, the clinic has served nearly 2,000 patients.

In addition to his work at the Crossroads Clinic, also co-founded the Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care, an organization that advocates for refugees to have access to health insurance as well as the Christie Refugee Health Clinic which is run out of a refugee shelter.

Congratulations, Dr. Rashid!
