Summer Student Research Day puts summer students in the spotlight

July 31, 2017

By Lindsay Jolivet

Twenty students presented their research at the fourteenth annual Summer Student Research Day held at Women’s College Hospital on July 20, 2017.

The students are participants in Women’s College Research Institute’s summer student research program, which immerses them in research for three to four months each summer. Students work closely with scientists on a research project and attend weekly sessions provided by the scientists to build their skills in areas including research ethics, publishing papers and interpreting data.

This year’s students presented to scientists and staff on a variety of projects, ranging from a study of memory and attention in BRCA mutation carriers to barriers faced by sexual assault survivors seeking help.

The summer student research program has grown highly successful over 14 years with hundreds of applications each year. Students learn practical research skills to help prepare them for post-graduate education and their careers.

“Our summer students have made tremendous contributions to research at Women’s College Research Institute this summer,” says Dr. Paula Rochon, vice-president of research at Women’s College Hospital. “I’d like to thank them for all of their hard work and I hope the experience will help them incorporate science into their future careers.”
