Congratulations to Dr. Husam Abdel-Qadir, scientist at Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) and cardiologist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), who was awarded a Women’s Heart and Brain Health Chair Award from the Heart & Stroke.

Dr. Abdel-Qadir is a newly appointed scientist at WCRI, with additional appointments at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Health. His recent PhD thesis focused on the cardiovascular health of women with breast cancer, as these individuals often experience multiple chronic conditions as a result of their cancer treatments.

With heart disease and stroke as a leading cause of death and disability among Canadian women, Heart & Stroke, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and New Brunswick Health Research Foundation have provided funding for four chair awards to encourage collaboration between research institutes across Canada. The awards will support investigators committed to improving women’s heart and brain health, with a focus on health services and the impact of social, cultural, and environmental factors. The Chairs will also serve as members of the Heart & Stroke Canadian Women’s Heart Health Research Network, identifying gaps in research and developing new policies, programs and interventions.

Dr. Abdel-Qadir’s research has already provided unique insight to help clinicians measure the benefit of certain cancer treatments against their future impact on a patient's cardiovascular health With this chair award, he hopes to expand his research to include the cardiovascular concerns of older women with non-cardiovascular disease to enhance management of these conditions.

Congratulations to Dr. Abdel-Qadir on this outstanding achievement!
