Meet Lois Hindmarsh

Name: Lois Hindmarsh

Title & Department: Volunteer & Team Leader at Front Information Desk

On the WCH team for: 7 years

  1. What does your typical work day look like?
My shift begins and ends by working with a fellow volunteer to welcome our WCH guests and guide them to their appointments. That can be straight forward or can involve a great deal of problem solving depending on how much information our guests can provide. If they should require physical assistance, we aim to provide that as well. Questions asked of us are numerous and varied and we do our very best to answer them kindly and appropriately. Each day is unique but also rewarding!

My role as “Team Leader” involves scheduling weekly shifts for my twenty team members, keeping the desk info current and correct and responding to questions and concerns from my team members. I have the pleasure of liaising with my Supervisor, Francine Savelson, to address front desk issues and arrange for new staffing. She is an invaluable resource and support for the team.

  2. What excites you the most about working at WCH?
It excites me to know that I can make a positive difference in people’s lives by extending a friendly greeting and showing empathy as I respond to their requests. It’s also exciting to be able to work alongside a committed team who share my passion for helping others.

  3. How does your work contribute to creating a positive patient experience?
Everything I do or say at the desk is aimed at making each WCH guest feel welcomed and care for. I do my best to treat everyone with dignity and respect and hope I have played a part in making their WCH visit a positive one, whether through my words and/or my actions.

  4. Tell us one (or three) thing(s) that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?
As a young church organist, a fellow baritone parishioner and I cut a record to raise money for a new organ. I’m happy to report it was successful. More recently I’ve done a Segway tour of Lisbon and stood in Nelson Mandela’s jail cell.
