Meet Oscar

March 11, 2019

Name: Oscar (Handlers: Barbara Bowlby & Mary Jo Thompson)

Title & Department: St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog

On the WCH team for: 10 months

1. What does your typical work day look like?

I start my day with a healthy breakfast of yummy kibble and then a long walk to do my “business.” Next, I receive a good brush to make me handsome and fluffy. I get very excited when I put on my St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog bandana & medallion along with my own personal WCH ID tag.

On arriving at WCH, I go directly to the Volunteer Office to say hello to Kimberley, Julia and all the volunteers who manage the book sales. From there, we are off to see all my friends in Human Resources. They love my puppy dog eyes! I meet each and every one with a snuggle and roll over for my belly rubs.

Next, we are off to the many waiting areas around the hospital to meet patients, their families and the many staff who I have come to know. My moms hand out my “business cards” so everyone knows all about me and my breed, Coton de Tulear.

After an hour of greeting and interacting with people, we head home and generally I sleep all afternoon dreaming of my wonderful morning at WCH!

2. What excites you the most about working at WCH?

I love making so many new friends every visit. I also love all the belly rubs I receive from everyone, pats on my head and being told how cute I am!

3. How does your work contribute to creating a positive patient experience?

I love to snuggle up to anyone that smiles at me and provide affection, comfort and unconditional love. I think I distract people from the reason that they are visiting the hospital and I boost their spirits. I try to make everyone smile!

4. Tell us one (or three) thing(s) that your colleagues would be surprised to learn about you?

  1. My favourite chew toy is “Mr. Gingerbread.”
  2. I have a large collection of business ties and costumes.
  3. I have over 1,800 followers on my Instagram account "ourlittleman_oscar
