CACE awarded SIM-one grant!

June  1, 2015

Congratulations to Dr. Nicole Woods, director of the Centre for Ambulatory Care Education (CACE) at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), and CACE scientist Stella Ng on being awarded a $99,000 grant for their study entitled Learning in place to support aging in place: A virtual home-based homecare curriculum. The grant was awarded through the SIM-one Simulation-Based Continuing Interprofessional Development Program in At-Home Care of Seniors funding program.

Dr. Woods and Ng are the principal investigators of the project. Additional investigators from WCH include Dr. Cynthia Whitehead, Dr. Paula Rochon and Karen Gold. The team will work alongside teachers and practitioners from VHA Home Healthcare, St. Michael’s Hospital, Ryerson University, George Brown College and Fanshawe College.

This innovative, evidence-informed curriculum will help personal support workers, nurses and rehabilitation professionals provide more attentive, interprofessional care where many older adults want to stay – in their homes. Using the online curriculum, professionals will be able to navigate virtual home environments individually or in learning teams, and learn through patient profiles. The curriculum will cover important content regarding mental health, fall prevention and interprofessional consultation. Application of learning will be encouraged through test-enhanced learning. With a content focus on dementia, delirium and depression, the curriculum is situated in a context-rich virtual home and supported by educational theory-informed assessments and application opportunities. Home healthcare professionals will gain knowledge, confidence and interprofessional savvy. The curriculum is expected to become a province-wide resource for healthcare training.

This successful SIM-one grant is testament to the ability of the CACE team to garner innovation and research funds and is a direct link to the current and future innovative methods being explored at Women’s College Hospital.
