WCRI wraps up another successful summer of student research

August 10, 2015

Every summer for the last 12 years, undergraduate and graduate students have been coming to Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) to participate in its popular, unique summer student research program. What started in 2004 with only five students has now grown to 40 trainees this summer.

“I have been really inspired watching our program grow over the last few years, meeting our students and learning about their research,” says Dr. Paula Rochon, vice-president of research at Women’s College Hospital. “I’ve heard from so many of them that their experience has been invaluable and that we truly offer a unique opportunity for students to explore research in women’s health.”

The program recruits undergraduate and graduate students to work closely with a WCRI scientist on a research project for 12 to 16 weeks. Students also have the opportunity to attend a series of research skills sessions that explore various aspects of the research process and focus on the skills necessary for research in women’s health.

Recently, the summer student program came to a close with its12th annual Summer Student Research Day. During this event, 15 students presented the research they conducted over the summer on topics including diabetes, healthcare innovation, access to HIV testing and care, and much more.

“The event is a special opportunity for our students to share their research with Women’s College Hospital and the broader academic community, and I appreciate that so many individuals came out this year to hear about this work,” says Dr. Rochon.

Thank you to all of the students who participated in the program and research day, as well as the scientists, research teams and staff for providing mentorship and support this summer. A special mention is extended to Cynthia Uy for all of her hard work in coordinating the program and research day this summer.
