Women’s College Hospital Does it With Pride!

June 2, 2014

Women’s College Hospital kicked off the launch of a month-long series of Pride festivities at the hospital with the unveiling of a large Pride flag in the hospital lobby.

“At Women’s College, we have always been deeply committed to diversity in the workplace,  to the communities we represent, and to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our patients and for our staff, physicians and volunteers,” said WCH president and CEO Marilyn Emery, who lead the celebration with board chair Mary Lou Maher.

The celebration is a lead up to WorldPride 2014. An international event, WorldPride runs from June 20-29 and will be held in Toronto, marking the first time the event will be held in a North American city.

“WorldPride represents a unique opportunity for WCH to celebrate our LGBTQ community and reaffirm our support toward continuing progress in equality of rights for all individuals, right here at home while the world is watching,” said Emery.

Among a slew of planned activities, Women’s College Hospital will be participating in the WorldPride Dyke March on June 28 with a goal of marching with 100 women and girls as part of the WCH team.

Emery encouraged all staff, physicians and volunteers to each gather a group of 10 women and girls to march. Every WCH staff member, volunteer or physician that registers for the March will earn an entry into a draw for four Cadillac Fairview gift cards. Diversity in the workforce

Last year, WCH conducted a Workforce Survey to give the organization a snapshot of the diversity within its workforce. The results, presented at the launch of Pride month, will help the hospital meet the growing needs of its workforce and communities it serves, said Emery.

“The results will allow us to gain a better understanding of the individuals who make up our organization and guide us in implementing new policies, programs or practices to make WCH an even better place to work,” Emery explained. “And I’m happy to report that we had an excellent participation rate and we will be forming a committee that will work on implementing the learning from this survey.”
