For Doctors’ Day this year, Women’s College Hospital (WCH) recognizes its outstanding physician team.

In addition to providing exemplary clinical care, WCH physicians are leaders in educating the next generation of clinicians and advancing research in a variety of scholarly domains. WCH physicians have, with their colleagues from various health disciplines and nursing, introduced several new patient-centered services that aim to keep people out of hospital.

“In the last two years, Women’s College Hospital has undergone many changes – from constructing a state-of-the-art facility to introducing a new electronic patient record. Throughout all of these transitions, our physicians have shown immense flexibility, a willingness to collaborate, and a commitment to patient care,” said Dr. Danielle Martin, vice president, medical affairs at WCH.

Doctors’ Day is celebrated annually, across the province, on May 1.This day was specifically chosen as it coincides with the birthday of Dr. Emily Stowe, Canada’s first female practicing physician – and a very prominent figure at WCH.

Dr. Stowe was instrumental in the founding of Woman’s Medical College, the first Canadian medical college for women, in 1883. The college eventually evolved to become a driving force for establishing a hospital for women, led by women physicians.

In 1911, Women’s College Hospital and Dispensary – a modest, seven-bed facility – opened its doors. Women’s College Hospital has been growing ever since and has made great strides in medicine and research aimed at advancing and advocating for the health of women.

Women’s College Hospital invites all patients, staff, volunteers and physicians to celebrate Doctors’ Day. Share your stories online. (Use hashtags: #PatientsFirst and #WCHdocs.)
