Women’s College Hospital celebrates another milestone

November  3, 2014

Applause broke out among the many Women’s College Hospital (WCH) staff, physicians and volunteers who gathered, late last month, to watch as the last steel beam was hoisted to the top of the new facility where it would be installed permanently. This topping off ceremony, which marked the structural completion of phase two for the hospital, signifies the beginning of the next chapter at WCH.

“It’s hard to believe that after so many years of planning and hard work, we are almost there,” said Marilyn Emery, president and CEO, WCH. “Our new building and what it represents will help us change how healthcare is delivered in this province.”

The completion of the building in 2015 will bring many new advancements, including 16 new gynecological exam rooms, providing space for the expansion of WCH’s regional centre of excellence in gynecological health and colposcopy care. In addition, two new advanced procedure rooms for gynecology, pain and endoscopy will allow procedures to be moved out of the OR into an ambulatory setting.

As well, WCH’s Acute Ambulatory Care Unit – which provides short stay for complex medical patients so that they can be assessed, investigated and managed for their chronic conditions – will double in size.

Ultimately, the new facility will allow patients to transition seamlessly from one health provider to another and support the delivery of vital, complex surgeries without the need for overnight hospital stays.

“Women’s College Hospital is known for always pushing the boundaries of traditional thinking. We are building a facility that will embrace our entire community – and the bright, iconic pink cube at its centre will be a beacon of light for our future and the future of healthcare,” said Emery.

The new facility would not be possible without the help of Women’s College Hospital Partnership, which includes: Bilfinger Berger Global Investments, The Walsh Group, Bondfield Construction, Black & McDonald, Perkins Eastman Black and IBI Group.
