Celebrating the Compassion and Commitment of WCH Nurses

2011 is a milestone year at WCH. Not only is it our 100th anniversary, but it also marks 100 years of nursing at Women’s College. In 1911 we hired our very first nurse, Clara Dixon, who provided dedicated service for 39 years. A century later our nurses continue to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to nursing excellence in patient care.

During Nursing Week, May 9-15, WCH paid tribute to nursing in recognition of their remarkable contribution toward quality health care and the impact that nurses have on the lives of patients.

Nursing Week is a professional celebration that is recognized nationally and takes place annually over the week of Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12. Chief nursing executive Jane Mosley worked closely with the Nursing Week committee to create events that facilitate scholarship, community and leadership for WCH nurses.

The main event was the nursing luncheon on May 12, where nurses, volunteers and other hospital staff gathered in Emily Stowe’s Café to mingle with colleagues and applaud those receiving awards. Marilyn Emery, president and CEO, addressed the crowd, commending all for their wonderful work over the past year, and paying tribute to 100 years of nursing at WCH.

“My gratitude extends to each and every one of you. You all are such shining stars and vibrant members of our Women’s College community,” said Emery. “Without your hard work and dedication Women’s College Hospital simply would not be the beloved institution that is it.”
