For Dr. Samantha Nutt, Family Practice physician at Women’s College Hospital, the list of achievements is not a short one. After being appointed to the Order of Ontario in 2010, recognized as one of 200 Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum in 2009 and named one of Canada’s 25 Transformational Canadians by the Globe and Mail last fall, Dr. Nutt most recently received one of Canada’s highest civilian honours: the Order of Canada.

Internationally renowned humanitarian and founder and executive director of War Child Canada, Dr. Nutt was appointed to the order for her contributions to improving the plight of young people in war-affected nations throughout the world. She has spent over 15 years at the front lines of some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones – including Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, the Congo, Sierra Leone and Darfur – and has become a leading voice and sought-after public speaker in the field of humanitarianism.

“I’d like to thank Gov. Gen. David Johnston for this tremendous honour,” said Dr. Nutt. “I am truly grateful to be among this year’s Order of Canada recipients.”

Dr. Nutt’s appointment is one of 50 new appointments to the Order of Canada. The order recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Notable recipients in the past have included David Suzuki, Margaret Atwood and Stephen Lewis.

After being appointed on June 30, by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, Dr. Nutt had a few patriotic words:

“This will be a Canada Day I will never forget.”

And with the Order of Canada under her belt, Dr. Nutt isn’t slowing down. She has also found the time to write a book – Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies & Aid – set to be released on Oct. 25, 2011 by McClelland & Stewart Ltd. It is available for preorder everywhere including Amazon.ca and Indigo.ca.
