Excellent care for all

from the June 27, 2011 issue of Connect

Each time Barbara Tabuno arrives at Women’s College Hospital, she feels not only safe in the hands of her health-care providers, but empowered to be actively involved in her own care. Tabuno has cutaneous t-cell lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, and is a patient in the Phototherapy Education and Research Centre (PERC), part of our dermatology department.

“I’m in the hands of health-care professionals who go beyond the call of duty to make me a stronger person,” says Tabuno. “They’ve not only put my many fears to rest, but they’ve also given me a second chance to live my life to the fullest.”

Recognizing patients as active participants on their own health team is not just something that occurs in theory – it lives in our practice and is also one of six new values Women’s College Hospital has made a formal commitment to in its new Declaration of Patient Values. Now a permanent fixture on the walls at Women’s College, this declaration acts as a constant reminder to everyone of the promise we’ve made to provide the best possible care for all patients.

Created in accordance with Ontario’s Excellent Care for All Act, which aims to improve the quality and value of the patient experience, the Declaration of Patient Values was informed by the results of Women’s College Hospital’s report, A Thousand Voices for Women’s Health. The pioneering study surveyed 1,000 Ontario women from diverse backgrounds to help gain insights into the patient experience and to inspire ideas for the future of health-care within an ambulatory setting.

“The Declaration of Patient Values statements are truly inspired by the patient,” says Jane Mosley, chief nursing executive/health disciplines and professional affairs. “We very thoughtfully selected these values based on the feedback we received from the community, because the patients are at the centre of all we do. We don’t just post these values – at Women’s College, we live these values every day.”
