New Family Practice location

Oct. 17, 2011

As you enter the third and fourth floor of 77 Grenville Street, it’s hard not to notice the dramatic changes to Women’s College Hospital’s Family Practice Health Centre (FPHC). Housed, until recently, in Burton Hall, the centre’s new space is well-lit and spacious, while muted colours lend an airy and tranquil feeling to promote healing.

However, the benefits of the new space, which FPHC officially unveiled on Sept. 17, 2011, don’t stop at aesthetics. The space is also more practical and efficient on a clinical, teaching and interprofessional level.

“We’re excited about the opportunities this space offers,” says Corry Thomas, executive director, FPHC. “Being larger and more modern, it is better suited to our needs and allows us to treat patients, educate students and work collaboratively in a greater capacity. It also provides greater opportunities for expansion allowing us to advance and continue to treat patients in new ways.”

In addition to the third and fourth floor clinical spaces, FPHC has also taken over the second floor as administrative space with physician offices, larger group conference and consult rooms and a resident work/learning space – all of which were lacking in its former location.

The addition of these consult and conference rooms allows physicians to take the team-based or interprofessional approach to treatment and education to another level.  Physicians can carry out group consults with several patients, students and/or other physicians or staff to determine and inform on the best courses of action. This addition also means that the entire clinic team now has the space to congregate and discuss important clinical issues.

So what do the patients have to say about the new space?

“I love it,” says Angela Harewood-Holder. “Because I use a walker, it wasn’t always easy to access Burton Hall, but the location of 77 Grenville and the access ramp make it easy to just pull up and enter the building. The new centre is bright, modern and open which makes me feel safe and like my health is in good hands. It’s a complete mood changer – going there really helps to cheer me up.”

But that’s not all. FPHC’s new location was purpose-built to accommodate the recent implementation of electronic health records with ample workstations in all administrative spaces and clinic rooms large enough to hold all necessary hardware. As well, staff have access to computers, even in examination rooms, so charting or accessing the FPHC portal can be done at anytime, in any location.

Moreover, larger examination rooms aim to promote patient safety and comfort while meeting all infection control and occupational health and safety guidelines. As well, the four colour-coded clinical teams are modeled to reduce confusion and prevent error when physician or staff transition from one space to another.

“All in all the move has been a huge success, says Thomas. “The new location reflects the culture of innovation that Women’s College Hospital is known for.”
