Paddles Up for Women’s College Hospital’s Dragon Boat Team

Team WOW (Women’s on Water) represented Women’s College Hospital at two dragon boat festivals this spring. With paddlers from finance, women’s mental health, family practice, medical imaging, security and human resources, the team made new friends, got a fantastic workout and showed team spirit and pride for Women’s College.

So, what is a dragon boat anyway?

It’s a very long and narrow canoe-style human-powered boat. Twenty paddlers make up a crew, plus a drummer and a helmsman to steer the boat. The crew paddles in sync to the beat of the drum, gliding the boat across the water and vying for the shortest time to the finish line.

“This was my first season paddling for a dragon boat team,” said Melissa Aldham, administrative assistant at Women’s College. “It was great to interact with other staff from the hospital that I normally don’t get a chance to work with.”

Team WOW competed at the Lively Dragon Milton Charity Dragon Boat Race and the Pickering Dragon Boat Festival where they raced to the finish in the Health Care Professionals Cup, competing with colleagues from other hospitals. During the festival, Team WOW learned how to stay in sync and work together as a team.

Although they didn’t bring home any medals this year, Team WOW was able to represent Women’s College Hospital with team spirit and enthusiasm.

Stay tuned for more information about how to join the 2011 team.
