Run for Women

July 8, 2013

On the morning of Saturday, June 22, 2013 hundreds of people gathered in Unionville in Markham to run for women. A Shopper’s Drug Mart event, Run for Women kicked off the summer at Crosby Park with 10K, 5K and 1K Little Steps Girls runs. A portion of the event proceeds, pledges and donations will support the interdisciplinary Women’s Mental Health Program at Women’s College Hospital (WCH).

“Running is a social activity that is helpful for people who are suffering from mental illness, such as depression, because they often end up isolated and trying to cope on their own,” said Dr. Valerie Taylor, psychiatrist-in-chief, WCH. “Run for Women is a great way to raise awareness and funds for mental health in Canada.”

Before the runners were off, Olympian Jennifer Heil shared some words of inspiration and encouragement. Along with Heil and Dr. Taylor, Running Room founder John Stanton and CP 24 host Nalini Sharma spoke on the importance of running and community support.

Fundraising is continuing throughout the summer until Aug. 15. Proceeds from the run supporting WCH will be used for further research and education for mental health. If you would like to donate, please click here.

The Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women in Unionville was the first of six in Canada this summer. Run for Women is raising money to support women’s mental health organizations across Canada. Events will also be taking place in Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Alberta and Quebec City.
