Dr. An-Wen Chan receives prestigious award from the University of Toronto

Congratulations to Dr. An-Wen Chan, scientist at Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) and dermatologist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), who was awarded the William Goldie Prize and Travel Award for Research from the University of Toronto (U of T).
Dr. Chan is leading high-profile global initiatives to improve how research is designed, conducted and reported. He founded and currently chairs the international SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials) initiative, which provides a set of evidence-based standards to improve the quality of clinical trials.
Under Dr. Chan’s leadership, SPIRIT has been translated into seven languages and widely endorsed by over 150 medical journals, research organizations, funders and sponsors. In addition, over 600 published clinical trial protocols worldwide have been developed based on SPIRIT.
The William Goldie Prize and Travel Award is awarded annually to a member of the Department of Medicine at U of T who is within 10 years of appointment to the department and who has made a contribution of notable merit to the advancement of sound knowledge in internal medicine. Prizes have recently been awarded to contributions in research, teaching and quality, and innovation. The award will be presented at the Department of Medicine’s Annual Day Awards Ceremony on June 11, 2019.
