It's Heart Month! Join us to get heart healthy
February is Heart Month and Women's College Hospital's Women’s Cardiovascular Health Initiative (WCHI) is hosting several educational and interactive activities throughout the month to promote awareness about heart disease and to inform, engage and educate staff, clinicians, and volunteers.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, heart disease affects more than 2.4 million adults in Canada and is the second leading cause of death in the country. For women in particular, heart disease is the leading cause of death for those over the age of 55. Women are seven times more likely to die from a heart attack or stroke than breast cancer and are also 16 per cent more likely to die after a heart attack than men. Tuesday, February 12 | Lunch and Learn session – Exercise and heart health | Pink Cube | 12 p.m.
Mireille Landry, registered physiotherapist, and Faith Delos-Reyes, registered kinesiologist, cardiology, present on the topic of exercise as a vital sign.
Wednesday, February 13 | National Wear RED Day – Join us for a group photo! | Peter Gilgan Atrium | 12 p.m.
Wear red in support of women and their heart health. Share photos of your red outfits on social media using the hashtag #HerHeartMatters.
All those who wear red are invited to stop by the Peter Gilgan Atrium at 12 p.m. for a group photo.
Friday, February 22 | Facebook Live on women's heart health | 10:30 a.m.
To raise awareness of heart disease, Women’s Health Matters is hosting a Facebook Live with experts Jennifer Price, advanced practice nurse, cardiology, WCHI, and Debbie Childerhose, registered physiotherapist and WCHI program coordinator about risk factors for heart disease, what is unique to women, and prevention strategies for stronger heart health. You can submit questions to our experts during the Facebook Live, or submit them in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org.
