Congratulations to Dr. Husam Abdel-Qadir, scientist at Women’s College Research Institute (WCRI) and cardiologist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH), who was awarded a 2018 Polanyi Prize from the Council of Ontario Universities.

To honour the achievement of John Charles Polanyi, recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Ontario Government established the award to provide funding to scientists who are revolutionizing research to advance human knowledge, drive social progress and create a better future. Each year, up to five Polanyi Prizes with a value of $20,000 each are awarded to outstanding researchers in the early stages of their career. The Honourable Merrilee Fullerton, minister of training, colleges and universities, and Her Honour Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario were both in attendance at the award ceremony held on Tuesday, January 22.

“I’m honoured to receive such a prestigious award for my research in cardio-oncology and I’m grateful to my mentors who have guided me to where I am today,” says Dr. Abdel-Qadir. “I also consider myself extremely fortunate to work within the supportive environment of WCH. I look forward to continuing my work as a clinician-scientist here – pursuing better cardiovascular outcomes for breast cancer survivors.”

During his medical training, Dr. Abdel-Qadir developed an interest in studying the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease among patients with multi-morbidity. In 2017, he received his PhD from the University of Toronto’s Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, which focused on the cardiovascular health of breast cancer survivors. His unique cardio-oncology research is addressing the challenges of providing the best possible care to breast cancer survivors who are at increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Dr. Abdel-Qadir also recently received an early career Women’s Heart and Brain Health Chair from the Heart & Stroke to further support his research in improving women’s heart health.
