Redeployment wraps up at Kensington Gardens LTC
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Long-Term Care (LTC) homes profoundly. Women’s College Hospital (WCH) is among the hospitals mobilizing to provide support to staff and residents at LTC homes across the city and our province. As the hospital resource partner for Kensington Gardens LTC, WCH had 17 staff members volunteer to be redeployed to Kensington Gardens LTC for approximately two and a half months.
Our WCH staff worked in conjunction with Kensington Gardens LTC staff to support their residents during this challenging time. The WCH team took on over 360 shifts during their redeployment at Kensington Gardens LTC, stepping up and answering the call at a crucial time in response to the pandemic.
Since the first redeployment shift at the end of April, WCH staff volunteers – including physiotherapists, nurses, technicians, researchers and aides – have taken on new roles. We would like to share a few of the reflections from the WCH Team upon their final shifts at Kensington Gardens LTC:
“My last day at Kensington Gardens was definitely an emotional one. The staff in my unit gave me a farewell card and shared their appreciation for my help. I promised to return and say hello once this was all over. At the end of my last shift, I was so touched when, as I ended my shift and was about to walk out of the building, one of the resident's children waited outside to give me a card and thank me. I helped the resident speak to her children through video chat every day, so you can imagine my reaction when I finally saw them in person :)”
“Overall, it was an unforgettable experience and I would not hesitate to return if the need arises. Thanks!”
“Overall, it was a positive experience, it was heart warming to see how wonderful the PCAs and nurses are and to develop relationships with people there.”
“ (I)… gained a greater perspective of our health care system and its issues and hope to use my experience in a small way to encourage change.”
“Thank you! I have a lot of respect for the work done there. I loved getting to know the staff and residents. I would help out again, if needed.”
These are just a few of the many examples of the wonderful moments and meaningful work happening at Kensington Gardens. We cannot thank all of our WCH healthcare heroes enough for volunteering to work at Kensington Gardens LTC. Our team members went above and beyond the call of duty in response to the pandemic.
