Register today for the Pride & Remembrance Run in support of WCH
This June, Women’s College Hospital and Women’s College Hospital Foundation (WCHF) will once again be participating in the annual Pride & Remembrance Run. Women’s College Hospital Foundation is honoured to be a recipient of Pride & Remembrance’s first multi-year pledge, a commitment to raise $100,000 over a three-year period for the Pride and Remembrance Compassionate Fund at WCH’s Transition Related Surgeries Program.
Organized by the Pride and Remembrance Association, the Pride & Remembrance Run is a 5km run/walk that takes place in Toronto each June. Over the past 23 years, this event has raised over $1.6 million for local charities that support the LGBTQ+ community.
The Compassionate Fund at Women’s College Hospital is designed to assist trans people who are facing financial challenges and are undergoing transition-related surgery at WCH. Although access to care for trans patients has been improving in recent years, not all transition-related surgeries are covered by OHIP and costs to patients can be considerable. The fund supports individuals with some of the ancillary costs associated with their operation, such as travel and accommodation for those living outside the GTA. This additional support will help to alleviate the often devastating financial burden of transition-related expenses, ensuring patients have access to comprehensive care regardless of their socio-economic background.
With over 1,600 participants, the Pride & Remembrance Run is the largest of its kind in Canada and is one of the most popular running events in the GTA. The run is the only annual athletic event during Toronto's Pride Week, promoting and fostering community spirit, goodwill, volunteerism, and sportsmanship in the Canadian LGBTQ+ community. It is also one of the most successful fundraising events during Pride week, drawing celebrities, political leaders and community members together in support of charities that benefit the LGBTQ+ community.
