WCH named a GTA Top 100 Employer once again!

As we know, Women’s College Hospital (WCH) is a world leader in health for women, health equity and health system solutions. We are transforming the health of women and under-served populations, creating new models of technology-enabled care to improve access, pioneering health system solutions and leading world-class research. As an academic hospital, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, we are committed to providing exceptional training to future generations of healthcare providers.

In 2019 Women’s Virtual was launched – Canada’s first virtual hospital, allowing us to treat and care for patients in the setting most appropriate for them. The goals of Women’s Virtual are to improve access to specialty care, reduce wait times and emergency department visits and help older adults age at home, where they want to be.

In early 2020, COVID-19 pushed our organization to innovate quickly and create virtual options for our patients. COVIDCare@Home was rapidly developed to enable patients with COVID to connect with their primary care providers through video visits and remote monitoring, giving patients access to care while isolating. We continued to leverage technology to develop an online fast-track assessment tool for our COVID-19 Assessment Centre to reduce wait times and promote physical distancing.

The continued focus on our People Strategy has helped frame some exciting work, such as an evaluation of our compensation and benefits package. This review also led to the evolution of our non-union compensation framework to ensure WCH remains competitive internally and externally within the healthcare sector. We also developed a corporate recognition program, the People’s Choice Award, which was designed to showcase and acknowledge the contributions of our clinicians, staff, scientists, learners, volunteers and experience advisors.  

As an organization, our response to COVID-19 focused on our employees – many of whom have been working on the front lines throughout the pandemic – and continuing to find opportunities to ensure they feel supported. As we continue to work through this time of constant change, our staff are provided with regular email updates from our CEO and bi-weekly virtual townhalls that are held as a forum to share information and answer questions from our staff and physicians. We also implemented a casual dress code and created a dedicated WCH Community Wellness Resources page with resources on self-care, meditation, childcare and other information for healthcare workers. Finally, with the onset of COVID-19 we worked to quickly roll out our Working Remotely initiative to support our staff when working off site.
