Health Records on iPhone Now Available to Women’s College Hospital Patients

  • October 7, 2020

TORONTO, October 7, 2020 — Today Women’s College Hospital (WCH) offers Health Records on iPhone, which brings together hospitals, clinics and the existing Apple Health app to make it easy for patients to see their available medical data from multiple providers whenever they choose. The Health Records feature is part of the Health app, which also shows activity, heart rate, nutrition and other health data consolidated from iPhone, Apple Watch and HealthKit-enabled third-party apps.

Health Records on iPhone empowers patients by allowing them to securely view and store their medical records from multiple different participating organizations directly on their iPhone. With a fuller picture of their medical information, patients are able to have more insight into their health, and richer conversations with their healthcare providers and family members.

“Women’s College Hospital is proud to be among the first in Canada to offer Health Records on iPhone. As we accelerate our virtual care strategy, we are committed to shaping a health system that people can navigate more effectively. We believe that digital tools like Health Records can contribute to more informed decision making and improve the healthcare experience,” said Heather McPherson, president and CEO, Women’s College Hospital.

Previously, patients’ medical records were held in multiple locations, requiring patients to log into each care provider’s website to piece together the information manually. Health Records creates a direct connection between medical institutions and a patient’s iPhone, allowing them to see a central view of their allergies, conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vitals. It also notifies patients when their data is updated.

Health Records on iPhone was designed to protect patients’ privacy through utilizing a direct, encrypted connection between the user’s iPhone and the healthcare organization. Downloaded health records data is stored on-device and encrypted with the user’s iPhone passcode, Touch ID or Face ID. Apple worked with the healthcare community to take a consumer-friendly approach, creating Health Records based on FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), a standard for transferring electronic medical records.

Patients can access Health Records from within the Health app and can download their health records by selecting Women’s College Hospital and authenticating with their patient portal username and password.

“We believe that the future of healthcare is connected, accessible and equitable. That is why we launched Women’s Virtual in 2019, transforming our approach to the delivery of patient care and creating Canada’s first virtual hospital. Being one of the first healthcare institutions in Canada to offer Health Records on iPhone is another important step as we continue to enhance the patient experience with innovative digital tools that provide more information about their health,” said Dr. Danielle Martin, executive vice president and chief medical executive, Women’s College Hospital.
