Patient Safety Information

Your safety is important to us.
Women’s College Hospital is committed to providing patients with the safest care possible. As a patient, you are the centre of your healthcare team. We
want to partner with you and your families to help keep you safe while in the hospital and at home.

Here are 5 tips to help you:

Be involved in your healthcare

  • Speak up if you have questions or concerns about your healthcare.
  • Keep a journal or write down your questions in advance.
  • Make sure healthcare providers confirm your identity before providing treatment or giving you any medications.
  • Consider bringing a friend or relative with you to medical appointments to help you understand the information you receive.
  • Tell us about your health

Tell us about your health

  • Tell your healthcare team about your past illnesses and your current condition, including any recent illnesses, hospital visits and other medical appointments.
  • Tell us if you have any special needs, such as requiring assistance when walking or getting up, or if you need special equipment.
  • Tell your healthcare team if you have any allergies or have had a reaction to medications or foods in the past.

Bring your medications with you

  • Bring all of your medications with you (e.g. over-the-counter medications, supplements and herbal remedies) to give a complete picture of what you are taking and
so that that your healthcare team can take them into consideration when creating a health plan.
  • Be sure to let your providers know if you are not taking any medications as they were prescribed and why.

Help prevent the spread of germs

  • Clean your hands frequently with hand sanitizer, which is readily available throughout the hospital.
  • If you develop symptoms of an infection such as a cough, fever, or runny nose before your appointment, call the hospital beforehand.
  • Ask friends and relatives not to accompany you to the hospital if they are ill or have cold symptoms.

Know what to do at home

  • Ask your doctor or healthcare team to explain what care you need at home and what symptoms you should watch for.
  • Ask what has changed with your medications, such as why you are taking any new medicines, how to take them, and for how long.
  • Ask whether you need a follow-up appointment and how to find out the date and time.
  • Find out who to call and their contact information, should you have a clinical concern or questions.
