Infection Prevention & Control

The Infection Prevention & Control program works with staff, physicians and volunteers to help prevent the spread of germs and ensure safety for all patients and visitors.

To control the spread of infections we use routine practices such as:

  • handwashing
  • environmental cleaning
  • sterilization of equipment
  • single use of supplies
  • education
  • additional isolation precautions

Infection prevention is everyone’s business – help us achieve our goal of providing safe and high quality healthcare by playing an important role in preventing the spread of germs while visiting our hospital.

Consider these tips when visiting Women’s College Hospital

Clean your hands often.

Keeping your hands clean is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs. You can clean your hands by using soap and water or hand sanitizer available throughout the hospital.
Remember to clean your hands:

  • Upon entering and leaving the hospital to avoid bringing in germs or carrying home germs to your loved ones.
  • After sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.
  • After using the restroom.
  • Before and after eating food.
  • After touch a cut or open sore.

Those providing your care will welcome your reminder to clean their hands before examining you or giving you medication.

If you are feeling unwell, consider rescheduling your appointment.

If you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever and/or chills
  • New or worsening cough

Consider rescheduling your appointment.

If you are unable to reschedule, please tell your healthcare provider that you have these symptoms. If you are feeling unwell and visit the hospital, you may spread your germs to others and make others sick.

Ask relatives and visitors not to accompany you if they are unwell.

Cover your cough and sneeze.

  • When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve. Do not cough or sneeze into your hands.
  • Dispose of used tissues in the garbage.
  • You may be asked to wear a mask to help protect others.
  • You may see this self-screening sign while visiting our hospital. Follow the instructions to help keep everyone safe.

Ask about our patient resources.

If you want more information about anything related to infection control or patient safety, feel free to ask your healthcare provider. Brochures and fact sheets can tell you more about how to properly clean your hands, cover your cough and manage certain illnesses.
