Cancer screening program for Indigenous women

Indigenous cancer Screening for women

The Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers is proud to host its second and third Cancer Screening Events for Indigenous Women. From the first screening, completed in December 2018, participants welcomed a program that pursued informed consent and cultural safety. This helps lessen some of the barriers many Indigenous women face during cancer screenings.  The initiative continues to promote a pathway for narrowing health gaps marginalized people face. To commemorate the anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), this year’s Cancer screening for Indigenous Women is scheduled for Sept. 13, 2019. The second date— Sept. 30, 2019 — observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Please join us in honouring this journey by wearing an Orange Shirt to show unified support.

For both upcoming events, Indigenous women will have opportunities to support one another through the cancer screening process in a safe and culturally sensitive environment. They will have access to holistic support, guidance from WCH Elder-in-Residence Senator Constance Simmonds, receive transportation assistance, enjoy a lunch of traditional Indigenous cuisine and receive a customary giveaway.

This program employs collaborative, community-based approach to culturally specific, safe and informed Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings. This initiative is in partnership with Native Canadian Centre Toronto, Toronto Central Regional Cancer Program – Cancer Care Ontario and WCH’s new Indigenous Health Education Group.
