Women’s College Hospital (WCH) is a member of Greening Health Care (GHC), a network of leading hospitals, healthcare groups and other organizations across North America working together to achieve deep energy and greenhouse gas emissions reductions in healthcare facilities. Members benchmark their performance and share best practices and success stories through workshops and an annual forum. Actual savings results are reported annually, and top-performing hospitals are recognized every year.

This year during the GHC Summer Workshop, WCH was recognized with the 5 Per Cent Club Award for its contribution to the health and well-being of the community by lowering facility energy use by more than 5 per cent since 2020. In actuality, the organization accomplished a 10.9 per cent energy reduction – well over the 5 per cent that gets organizations recognized by GHC.

This reduction was in large part due to WCH and Black & McDonald facilities teams working closely together on the implementation of energy conservation measures including an LED retrofit and HVAC and lighting setbacks for after hours and weekends. All accomplishments that were made without major capital investments.

Director of Facilities & Operations, Lauren Seager, additionally joined the panel discussion “Taking Immediate Action on Tackling Energy Efficiency” at the GHC Summer Workshop and showcased WCH’s work as a case study for attendees to grow and learn from.

Beyond reducing operational costs, these initiatives reinforce WCH’s role as a leader in environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation. By prioritizing energy-efficient technology and emphasizing staff and patient well-being, WCH has created a roadmap for future projects, paving the way for a brighter, greener future in healthcare. Congratulations to our WCH and Black & McDonald facilities teams on these incredible achievements!
