WCH’s scientist awarded funds to strengthen our national capacity in metaresearch

November 11, 2025

This year the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and Michael Smith Health Research BC have awarded $2.7 million to 14 research teams across Canada through the Research-on-Research joint initiative.

We’re proud to share that WCH’s Celia Laur is leading one of these research teams in exploring the role of the matched funding requirement in sustaining research impact and long-term partnerships.

Matched funding is the requirement for research funding applications to seek additional funds from non-government sources (e.g. Canadian Cancer Society). This requirement is thought to optimize and sustain research impact, collaboration and partner commitment, however, these assumptions are untested.

Laur and her team aim to understand who conducts match-funded research, learn from successful partnerships and share strategies for increasing long-term impact and project partner relationships.

The Research-on-Research joint initiative and Laur’s research is important because it strengthens our national capacity in metaresearch (research-on-research) by showcasing Canadian expertise and perspectives on the global stage and contributing to international efforts to optimize research funding and practice.

Congratulations Celia and her team!
