Welcoming Prime Minister Trudeau to WCH

March 8, 2024

We are thrilled to share that on Thursday, March 7, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, visited Women’s College Hospital alongside the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, for an important announcement regarding the federal government’s new pharmacare program supporting universal, no-cost coverage for contraception and diabetes medications and management tools.

As part of the visit, they learned more about our rich history of health equity and our many programs that continue this legacy today. They also toured the Bay Centre, which was established over 50 years ago as Toronto’s first hospital-based walk-in birth control clinic.

And while our programs and services at the Bay Centre have since evolved, at its core it remains a safe haven for women to access the care they need and is staffed by a team who believe, like we all do, that access to reproductive healthcare is everyone’s right. We are honoured that Prime Minister Trudeau chose Women’s College Hospital, timed with International Women’s Day, to share today’s announcement. It is a tremendous testament to the important work being done by our teams across the hospital.
