Volunteer Week: Meet Pierre

April 15, 2024

Happy National Volunteer Week! We’re featuring our dedicated volunteers, to offer the WCH community a chance to get to know each other and share our stories.

Name: Pierre-Paul Lacroix

Pronouns: He/Him/His

On the WCH team for: 1 month

1. Why did you start volunteering with WCH?

Being retired, I have more time to contribute in helping others. Having experienced my own health challenges over the last few years, and providing part-time caregiving to my elderly parents before their passing, I quickly realized how important volunteers are and how much care they can provide to families in stressful situations.

2. What does your typical volunteer shift look like?

Along with my volunteer partner, I provide wayfinding at the Information Desk in the lobby at WCH. The most common question received from patients and visitors is ‘Where do I go for … ?’ I try to offer some humour and gentle chit-chat to those who are lost, anxious or late for their appointment! I also fill the boxes with face masks in the front lobby, and assist people with calling a cab.

3. How does your volunteer work contribute to creating a positive patient experience?

Providing a sense of calmness to anxious visitors and helping them with navigating the hospital.

4. What’s your favourite part of volunteering with WCH?

Being the first point of contact when a person arrives at WCH and being able to direct them to their destination. Working with a team of dedicated volunteers and supported by a great Volunteer Manager is appreciated!
