Happy National Volunteer Week! We’re featuring our dedicated volunteers, to offer the WCH community a chance to get to know each other and share our stories.

Name: Somayeh Akbarshahi

Pronouns: She/Her/Hers

On the WCH team for: 1 month

1. Why did you start volunteering with WCH?

I began volunteering at WCH to make a meaningful contribution to a facility dedicated to women’s health. My decision was driven by my desire to support a setting that not only addresses the unique health needs of women but also actively practices healthcare equality. I strongly believe that we need to concentrate on specifically addressing women’s health issues and focus on providing equitable healthcare services for all genders. There is much work to be done in this area, and I am happy that even if I cannot be directly involved in research and the scientific aspects of this journey, I can still contribute to this valuable path. Volunteering here allows me to be part of an organization that is at the forefront of medical research and patient care, particularly in creating a supportive and efficient environment for patients as they navigate their health needs.

2. What does your typical volunteer shift look like?

During my shift as a Greeter and Check-in Assistant in the Lobby Lab, my primary role involves coordinating patient flow. This contributes to a positive patient experience by ensuring that each individual feels welcomed, respected, and cared for from the moment they enter the lab. By assisting with checking their laboratory requisitions and health cards, I help streamline the check-in process, reducing wait times and stress for patients. I also provide a friendly face and a listening ear, which can make a significant difference in a patient’s comfort and overall experience. My aim is to make their interactions with the healthcare system as smooth and positive as possible.

3. How does your volunteer work contribute to creating a positive patient experience?

My role significantly impacts the patient experience by streamlining the administrative aspects of their visit, which reduces stress and waiting times. By verifying and organizing requisitions efficiently, I help ensure that patients are seen promptly and that their tests are processed accurately. My interactions also provide a personal touch, offering reassurance and a friendly presence that can make all the difference in a healthcare setting.

4. What’s your favourite part of volunteering with WCH?

My favourite aspect of volunteering is the direct interaction with patients and the opportunity to assist them at the beginning of their healthcare journey in the Lobby Lab. It’s rewarding to see the relief and appreciation on a patient’s face when I help simplify the process for them, whether it’s by explaining the steps for a test or ensuring their documentation is in order. Additionally, the teamwork and camaraderie among the volunteers and staff at WCH inspire me every day, enhancing the overall environment and making my volunteer experience truly enriching. Every day I attend, I learn something new about EDI, which deepens my understanding of the critical issues we face. For instance today I learned that WCH has been a leader in sexual assault and domestic violence care since the 1980s.
